Our employees get all the rewards of working for such large, well-established international organization – like benefits, retirement savings plans and vacation days, with still living in small, rural and remote coastal communities. We like to say we love what we do, and get to live where we love.
The demand for sustainably farmed and sourced food – like responsibly farmed salmon – is expected to grow 13% by 2030. Careers and employment in this sector will need to keep pace with demand and accordingly we are always investigating growth and expansion opportunities.
We are part of an international company that also operates farms in northern Norway and Chile. Cermaq has about 4,500 employees around the globe and we sell our salmon to markets in South and North America, Asia, Europe and Russia.
We hire the best people and we are a great employer.
Our employees come from various countries, backgrounds and beliefs, but we all share one thing: a passion for our salmon and a desire to provide healthy, sustainable food for generations. We are an equal opportunity employer and we are confident that the faces of our company reflect this. Our employees range from young people who are starting their working lives on our farms, to seasoned executives. We have a large fish health department and have biologists, veterinarians and specialists as part of the team. In some cases, we have an agreement with local First Nations to share postings with those communities in advance of the roles being posted externally. This helps to ensure we are providing opportunities for those people living in remote communities with connectivity concerns.
We currently operate on the West Coast of Canada.
We currently operate 28 salmon farm licenses on both the east and west coasts of Vancouver Island in British Columbia. We also have 4 hatcheries and 2 processing plants – one which we own and operate, and one on contract.
We directly employ between 300 and 350 people. We have approximately 50 positions based at our processing plants, which are tied to our harvest schedule. This allows our processing employees more flexibility than our year-round scheduled positions at locations like our farms or offices. Many of our processing employees have other responsibilities such as commercial fishing or other seasonal work outside of the processing plant.
We have approximately 50 office-based roles, including the executive leadership team, who support the approximately 250 farm and warehouse based employees. The average annual salary of a Cermaq employee is just under $59,000; if benefits are included, the average annual salary rises to almost $65,000.
Salmon farming on BC’s coast provides thousands of direct and indirect jobs.
